Welcome to JURiiiS!

Welcome to juriiis.com, a project still currently in beta, which aims to explore ideas connected to law, justice and philosophy in ways which make these relevant, accessible and exciting. This project grew out of a demand from law students who felt a desire to explore these ideas further and in original ways once they had completed courses in legal theory or jurisprudence.

While the project is in beta mode, it will regularly be updated with pilot content, whose aim is to provoke thought, discussion and dissemination of the ideas and questions which are raised. Everyone is welcome, and indeed encouraged, to read and discuss the ideas contained on the site, and indeed to put forward issues which the forum should explore.

What is the goal of JURiiiS?

There is no one fixed goal as such other than the deeper exploration of questions which affects us all but which are often reserved for advanced university-level study. This site tries to do several things: to allow people to discuss such questions in a more relaxed and unstructured environment, to allow people to continue their exploration of these ideas in new contexts, and to get people to think more deeply about things which affect and interest them.

In doing this, this project aims to look at some original or new perspectives on law and justice, but also tries to explore some older ideas in new ways. One way in which this will be done is the consideration of the relationship between law and popular culture. Equally, the philosophical aspects of everyday life and culture might be considered to explain and explore deeper issues which are often mystified under complex language and pretentious ways of speaking.

It is hoped that this will develop into a mixture of a forum, a learning resource and an informal and exiciting source of original ideas.

Why is the homepage a picture of a shell on a beach?

Good question! This is visual link to a future post about how measuring the coast line and law pose similar problems…

Why is it called JURiiiS?

Juris is a popular abbreviation for jurisprudence, the philosophy of law. JURiiiS as a project grew out of the demand from students who had done two university modules on the philosophy of law and justice (‘jurisprudence i’ and ‘jurisprudence ii’) but felt that they had only scratched the surface, both in terms of the questions being asked and their intellectual and creative potential. Hence jurisprudence iii, or ‘JURiiiS’ to its friends.
